White Buffalo Calf Woman is sacred to the Lakota, Dakota, Nakota and Sioiux nations as well as the Cherokee and Navajo, for whom she is a symbol of hope, peace and prophecy.

As the story is told, she appeared to two Lakota men at a time of great famine.  One  of the men lusted for her and he immediately incinerated, leaving nothing but his bones.  The second man lead her to his village, with respect.

There, White Buffalo Calf Woman taught the people how to live in harmony with the natural and spiritual worlds and provided the sacred pipe. She taught the Seven Sacred Rites as guides for living which include: Girls Coming of Age, Vision Quest, The Making of Relatives, Keeping of the Soul, Sweat lodge, Sun Dance and Throwing the Ball.

After teaching the people, she told them that she would return in a time of need  and great change to restore harmony, balance, and spirituality.  Her return would be signaled by the birth of a white buffalo calf.   As he walked away she turned into a red, black, yellow and finally a white buffalo calf.

On June 4th, 2024, a white buffalo calf was born in Yellowstone National Park.

Proceeds from the sale of this painting will be reparatively given to a chosen organization focusing on land return, cultural preservation, and economic justice for the plains nations.
